My Mother-in-Law was born on June 21st 1932, so next month is her 80th birthday. The day she was born the #1 song in America was “In a Shanty in old Shanty Town” by
Ted Lewis. I have been tiring to find a copy on a 78rpm record. I was going to frame it as art work. I have had no luck finding it.

Then I had a great idea, all I need is the label. If I could get someone to scan it and Email it to me I could print it and place it on any old 78.

So I was wondering if you could help me out?

Thank You Very Much,

Greetings, I came across a phonograph at a flea market. It seems to be in good shape. The turntable turns smoothly and quietly. It didn't have a needle. In the top of the lid there was a plaque that said, "Mason And Wheeler." The cabinet appeared to be in excellent condition. I just took two pictures of it hoping I could find information on the internet. No luck so far. And I couldn't figure out how to post the pictures on here. Does anyone know anything about this phonograph? Is it worth the $280 that is being asked for it? Thanks.

Leoncavalli's I Pagliacci,Verdi's Aida are among them.
I wonder if they are worth anything. They are bulky and heavy
and I'm not one to go to a flea market or swap meet, so if you

Hello, Joao;

If you have 78s on the Columbia label that says "Made in England," it was made (manufactured) in their factory in Hayes, Middlesex, England. The copyrights now belong to EMI.

The numbers stamped into the "dead wax" area usually are the matrix numbers, which the company uses to identify each "take" recorded. Sometimes the catalog number of a record is also there, and matches the number on the record's label.

I hope this is helpful to you.

Hello;

I don't know anything about an experimental portable model, but I can tell you this much:

In November, 1925, Brunswick unveiled it's new all-electric phonograph called the Panatrope. It came in several different models (with prices to match) with and without radios. This information comes from Roland Gelatt's excellent book "The Fabulous Phonograph."

I know it's not much, but maybe it will be helpful.

To elaborate a bit, I'm designing and building my own phonograph recorder & player, but using modern materials. No electrics (still driven by a spring motor, and no electronic sound amplification), but I'm happy to use modern materials.

As such, I'm going for the greatest playback fidelity possible, and I figured I'd start by looking at the best designed reproducer (sound box). If anyone has a better material and/or reproducer (sound box) design, please share? Thank you so much!

Hi,

I am trying to track down which Phonograph/Gramophone models were known to have produced the greatest playback sound quality & fidelity?

Specifically, which diaphragm design & material, and what kind of sound box design provided for the greatest playback fidelity.

Are there any knowledge around which model(s) were known for this?

Thank you so much.

Mark
Eric Byron on "Who decided which songs would be packaged together on 2-sided records?"

I have always wondered who decided, prior to 1930, which recordings would be
packaged together on records with two sides. Did the record companies have
formulas? Were the companies trying to promote side B by having it next to
side A?

Did the companies have an entire department, one person or both in charge of
such decisions?

Has anybody written anything on the subject?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Hello everyone,

Thanks for reading.
I am on a personal quest along with another gal from Hawaii for a missing recording made in Nov, 16, 1891 of Queen Liliuokalani addressing her people and the people of the world in both the Hawaiian language and in the English language also.
The story goes, a man believed to be from Germany but we know is of German descent visited Hawaii several days prior to the above date mentioned.
He brought with him (As we believe it may have been purchased in San Francisco) the first known Thomas Edison phonograph machine to ever arrive in Hawaii, we know it was a recorder and player combined, that's all.

The man's name that brought the Thomas Edison phonograph was "Charles Stoeckle." Mr. Stoeckle was also known as "The Phonograph Man" in the local newspapers stayed in Hawaii for several years traveling around with the device from home to home and island to island. It was a few years later when corresponding with Edison did he receive a newer model phonograph and there was also a record of him receiving 250 more wax cylinders totaling around 1,000 wax cylinders in his collection. We also know that Mr. Stoeckle traveled from Hawaii to Fiji, Tahiti, Australia, and on to New Zealand but we believe he may have went without the phonograph. For the simple reason that all of the historical papers we viewed out of Auckland revealed he had another talent and used it to make his money. The papers called him "The Jeweler Agent." where he crafted the art of making all kinds of jewelry designs out of gold with a machine they then termed a "Lightning rod."

We would like to believe that his collection of wax cylinders was large enough and worthy that someone may still today own it or have heard of this or knows more than we do?
We do know he made the Charles Stoeckle made several journeys back to San Francisco via Hawaii. There are two other reports of Stoeckle elsewhere, according to the newspaper stories, Stoeckle played a recorded greeting from Elijah H. Allen, consul general of Hawai'i and traveled there to either make the recording or pick it up for the queen? The other is from a Washington D.C. report that he received a shipment from someone or some company of 250 wax cylinder recordings, thus adding to his collection. One ship passenger list shows Charles Stoeckle as 19yrs old in 1895.

If anyone reading this would be so kind as to provide any further information regarding the "Queens recording" or this man "Charles Stoeckle" it would deeply be appreciated and it will help fill a very important part of Hawaii's history.

Thank you

S. Alongi

Hi-I'm a collector and restorer of home recording machines. I have the machine my family used in the early 40's through early 50's, which is the first I ever restored. I have a pretty large collection of "home made" records as well, and I've written a few articles over the years about the machines, records, recording techniques, etc. Perhaps you would like to correspond off the forum?

The home recording machines were not prohibitively expensive for a middle class family, but the quality was not anywhere close to a professional recording. I have quite a bit of original advertising and factory/company literature so I can give you pretty accurate period prices. For example, a Wilcox-Gay Recordio (a popular brand and basically the first mass produced for home use) in the early 40's would have a list price of $129.95 for a radio/phonograph/recorder in a console furniture cabinet. Blank records cold be hand for as low as 12 cents each for the fiber based small discs, with the price increasing with size and quality.

Let me know what you would like to know. I wrote an article on the W-G machines many years ago for Antique Radio Classified magazine, which I have posted online at:

Let me know if I can be of further assistance!

I am writing a book and need information about records made privately. When I was a kid, my grandmother played a record for me that her brother and his buddies had made back in what I think was the 1930's. I don't want to include this in the book unless I know what I am talking about. Can anyone help? Especially interested in what the cost would have been.
Thanks!

As one who has transcribed hundreds, if not thousands of 78's of all eras for broadcast use, I can concur that your stylus will be just dandy for nearly every 78 you come across.

You may want to give some consideration to equalization, however. If you play through a modern turntable into a modern phono input, your records will be subject to the RIAA equalization curve which became the standard in the mid 50's but didn't exist when most 78's were made. In very general terms, this will give you too much bass and roll off the highs. the cheapest way around this is to find a phono pre-amp that has the ability to turn on and off the RIAA equalizatiion curve, and to use the auxilary, CD, video, or whatever other line input you have available rather than a phono input. If asked, I'll recommend a couple places online that sell them. You just don't get the full potential and sound quality from 78's through a modern RIAA phono input. I like the Rek-O-Kut Re-Equalizer, but that's a bit much for a casual listener. But it gives you several equalization schemes to try out.

As for your weight, what does the cartridge manufacturer list? I believe Shure lists 1.5 to 3 grams for that cartridge/stylus (going from memory here). I'd start at 2 and see how it goes.
