"Graying" is a common problem with old records usually attributed to playing with used needles. Records that were recorded with the singer close to the horn - which produces a nice, forward sound - appear to be more vulnerable.
My question is, does graying get worse if you play such records but make sure to use fresh needles? The blasting that occurs can make a record unlistenable when played on a modern turntable with a diamond stylus, but is often less pronounced when playing them on a Victrola

I have 4 out of 5 exercise records made in Chicago from 1920 to 1922. The name on the front is "Wallace" On the inside of the sleeves are pictures of Wallace doing exercises, with his voice set to music counting out the repetitions. The label is blue and says "Reducing Record"
Does anyone know anything about these?
I would be interested in selling them.

One of the great 78 rpm collectors in the United States is without a doubt R. Peter Munves who worked for RCA. I had a short but meaningful relationship with Mr. Munves during which he told me cactus needles SHED FIBRES INTO SHELLAC GROOVES AND BY FRICTION ARE WELDED/BURNED IN. He says this accounts for the scratchy sounds of English HMV; that everyone in England used cactus needles, that's why they are so noisy. Now, to his credit, I must say, I have many HMV records that were imported from the UK for radio performance only and they are less noisy than ones brought into the USA taxed and many second hand brought over in suitcases but from what information I have attempted to gain on the subject I cannot find one bit of information to substantiate R. Peter Munves' claim.

Hi - I'm new to this site, and I have a bunch of 78's that were my father's - mostly classical. The one I am researching at the moment was made in England. It is one-sided and is embossed with "His Master's Voice" on the back. The label is very hard to read - it is red with gold print. The # is 2-52667 - FERNANDO DE LUCIA - Se it mio noma saperv vai Bromere - I believe it is from The Barber of Seville.

Does anyone know anything about this record? I haven't been able to find much on the internet. Thanks! Beth in NJ

This album has been in my colllection since it was given to me in 1952. It stars the late Carlos Ramirez (famous Hollywood baritone) as Figaro. Giuseppe Bamboschek conducts the Victor Symphony Orchestra. I am trying to find information about this recording which bears the numbers 11-8190-A, 171363 on the label and imprinted on the margin. The album is inter-leaved with the opera story and libretto but there is no information about where or when it was recorded. I know that SONY has aquired Victor & RCA Victor companies but have been unable to find any reference to this particular recording.

I would greatly appreciate any help I could get on tracking this album which, by now, I have to consider as rare.

I inherited a 600+ opera record collection 78's from my grandfather. He lived in New Orleans and was respected as an authority on operas of his time. Many of his writings are in the Tulane University library. He has hand writtena 3x5 alphbetized index card file totaling about 300 cards. About 300 of these records are in individual dark blue jackets. This group is numbered from 1-280 and corresponds to their respective card. The other approximate 300 records are in old 10-set binders. Most of these records are red seal Victors. I noticed one record was transparent red which read Victor red seal deluxe. There where more 2-sided records than 1-sided records. Some have black Victor labels on them. Other labels were Columbia and other different ones. There are about as many artists as there are cards. My grandfather listened to his records so I would imagine they are in very good condition not mint or excellent. Myself, not knowing foreign languages, guess that these are mostly Italian and some French records. On some of these records he handwrote the year 1915-1940. My grandfather Albert Voss passed away in 1965.
These records and album sets are in 8 boxes. I will sell all or none of them for a fair market value price. If interested please contact me at my email address.

Hello, I have a small online record store and recently acquired several boxes of 78s, most classical but also some jazz and some miscellaneous genres.

"Upon the United States’ involvement in World War II, shellac (the main ingredient in record production) became strictly rationed to be used for the war effort. In Hawaii, this meant the end of what was then the only local record company, “Hawaiian Transcription Productions” (HTP). Bill Fredlund, who had since the late 1930’s been mostly unsuccessful in the Hawaiian record business with his “Leo Kupina’i Studios” (lkS), finally got a break in 1944, when he discovered a forgotten cache of shellac in an old Honolulu warehouse.

He speedily shipped it to California along with other ingredients needed in the record-making process (including large amounts of sugar), and so began Bell Records (not to be confused with an earlier, by then defunct, mainland label with the same name). Fredlund hired experienced engineer Young O. Kang, and began recording locally, competing well with the major Mainland and European labels in sales. The output of Bell seems to be mostly tourist-oriented, thus the label tends to be largely overlooked by record collectors today. However, one of their earliest recording sessions, issued in 1945, absolutely breaks the mold. It was of a Tahitian group lead by George “Tautu” Archer, consisting of a pahu (Tahitian bass drum) player (playing two different sized drums), a guitar player, and male chanting. Little to nothing is known about Archer, only that his first two recordings, “Toreau” and “Ama Ama,” for the lack of a better term, “really cook.” They have a sense of both the islands and the Mainland; of the old traditions, and the youth and flavor of “modernity.”
