My uncle has been collecting all types of records ever since he was 5 years old. He is now 71 years young and has over 500,000 records. Yes – it’s hard to believe – but he has that many.

Years ago (about 25) I started entering these records into a computer system so he can weed out the duplicates. Unfortunately, his health has not been good to him and he is currently in a retirement facility. He still wants to complete his mission but only comes to visit his home 1-2 times a week.

I would like to start getting rid of the duplicates we have accumulated. Perhaps even think about letting go of all of them. Of course, you are the first person I thought of because I know your love of records.

Is there somebody out there that would love such a collection? They are very old and range from classical, spiritual, blues and even tutorials.

The records are packed 60 per box and we have hundreds of boxes. If you are also looking for a particular song/record, please let me know. I have them listed in Excel Spreadsheet so they are easy to locate.

We also have tons of other sizes as well.

My 1913 Victor VVlX is a sweet mahogany I purchased earlier this August month. My concern is after I wind up the crank to no more than 23 times.. the records play fine but there is this annoying inconsistent pitch changes and I was looking to fix it myself BUT I am not experienced and do not want any frustrating surprises because of that. Also, ..is it normal to hear a slight rumble noise sound in the mechanism [?]

thank you for reading

So, I just have a quick question about two players I found today that I have interest in. I've always found old record players really cool, been wanting to find a good one for a while now. So, the first I found is a Brunswick model 207 serial 491969. In working conditions, and body is in fair condition with the screen on the front of the speaker all busted out and some wear on the back. The second I found is a Edison model 250 diamond disc phonograph player, made between 1915-25. Not sure if in working condition, but it looks pretty nice. The only problems I found were on the top edge on the left side, where the lift top and the body meet, they have scotch tape going 3/4 of the way across it due to a split in the wood. There's nicks and stuff elsewhere, but nothing major. Also, has about 40-50 thick Edison records that come with it in the drawers. For the Brunswick, I believe they're asking 325 and for the Edison they're asking 450. Each price seemed a little high to me. I just wanted to come here and see what you all saw as a fair price for each, and what you think they could be resold for if repaired, or if that would even be worth it. Thanks!

We have a collection of 78 rpm recordings, 20 10" and 30 12" discs, almost all opera singers. The collection was mostly accumulated in italy and shipped here, so there are many Voce del Padrone (italian HMV), a few Fonotipia and Gramophone Monarch, etc..
Our children have neither the interest nor the storage space for the collection, so we have to somehow dispose of it. I can send an Excel file with the complete listing to any interested parties.

Hi, first time posting here...so bear with me!

I'm a newby phonograph owner (wife bought me a VV-50 for Christmas. I broke it down and cleaned and oiled the motor. Took me a full day practically! The reproducer works well, but I still want to rebuild it too. Let me say, I've fallen in love with this hobby! Quite frankly, I've become obsessed with it these days on my vacation!)

Anyhow, I have some pre and post 1935 78s that I've played on it, but from what I read on this site, playing post 1935 records with an acoustic needle is a no no. I should be playing anything post 1935 with an electric stylus I believe.

So here is my issue. I really want to play the post 1935 78s (they are from about 1947, columbia red lables), but I don't want to destroy them. Can I play them with bamboo needles on my victrola without destroying the records? I've tried it and they sound well! (I cut a few bamboo needles with success!) But am I doing the same thing with the bamboo as I am with a metal needle, or will the bamboo prevent damaging the 1947 records?

RELATED to this, when I see a small amount of black residue on the needle tips after playing, does this mean I am actually destroying the records and the dust/residue is remains of the record? (Note: I see this with metal needles AND bamboo needles - both materials collect the black dust. AND I see it happening on the older pre 1935 records that I've played too! So this puzzles me. Why are the pre 1935 78s getting cut up when they were designed for playing with needles?)

I should add, I always use new needles for each playing.

If you've read this far, thanks in advance!

I have a couple of old 78s (recorded about 1917) that have hairline cracks and are warped. When I play them on a professional DJ turntable, the bounce is audible, but the results are much better when played on a consumer-grade player. The reason is that the DJ pickup weight is controlled with a counterweight, while the consumer unit uses a spring. The counterweight adds considerably to the vertical moment of inertia, accentuating the bounce. I would really like to have a spring option for my DJ turntable, to use in those limited cases of warped, but irreplaceable records.

With worn records, it occurred to me that when a shellac record is played, minute chipping occurs on one side of each wiggle in the groove, but not on the other. Examination under magnification seemed to confirm this. If such a record is played backwards, and then turned around again in software, the wear noise should be much reduced. I now have everything needed to do this, but have yet to reverse the soundstream and listen to the result. Listening to the reversed sound seemed disappointing, but the jury will be out until I re-reverse the sound and listen to several worn records.

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased an old standing gramophone from a thrift store. The inside box says "Hallet & Davis Boston since 1838". It does not have the handle to play. Does anyone know where I may purchase parts for this? I have no idea but thought someone on here may know.

I have a "Special" red-label 78 record that has, "Rodeheaver Labortories, Chicago, IL" listed at the bottom of the label. The artist is Ozerie Hall, and he whistles two songs. The main address is a local one, which is listed right under the title. There is a number lightly "scratched" in the label- 7041. Could someone please tell me around when the record was produced and whether or not it was recorded in Chicago, or locally? I appreciate any help because I have been working on an article around this record for a month now.

Hi folks, my first post here. Real name, Stephen Sutton, relocated from England to Vermont where I run my record company and arts center, and am making space for my record and phono collection, phase 1 now open as The Phonograph Room (www.phonographroom.org). I just acquired a machine which has no ID whatsoever and not being familiar with older US models I am stuck.. I have posted links to a webpage of pics. The machine is an internal horn table model (no lid, so I am estimating around 1910??) in fine mahogany. It has a three piece arm, weirdly crooked! The reproducer is an incorrect replacement as the grubscrew is 180 degress form the slot. 12" platter, nicely made and perforated, sorry I did not photo the underside. It has a two-spring motor held in a chassis of black painted iron and a primitive wooden horn (as might be expected, the voulme produced is pretty low_. Even the motor and casing has no marking of any kind, but it's too fine to be a home made assembly I think... I need to ID this for museum and insurance purposes so if anyone can help please do!
Pics are at http://www.phonographroom.org/mysterymachine.htm

I lucked up this weekend and found a 78 of "Get Yourself a Monkey Man" on Okeh Records. I BELIEVE it's in the 8100 series. Also included were a couple of Columbia Graphophone records, several Victor records (including one from Fred Waring), several Bing Crosby on Decca, Dinah Shore on Bluebird, etc. They were found on the top floor of an old movie theater that is being restored and I believe the records were used as "intermission music".

My father recently passed away and left me with an absolutely massive collection of records. I would like to start the process of cataloging in a professional way in an Excel spreadsheet and was wondering if one of the experts on this site had one, or could tell me what fields I should have in the spreadsheet to do it right. I would like to take my time over many months, perhaps years and put every field of data a professional from the music industry would appreciate. I would also prefer not to use one of the programs I've seen on the web and just stick with an Excel spreadsheet format.

Any advise would be appreciated.

My Mother-in-Law was born on June 21st 1932, so next month is her 80th birthday. The day she was born the #1 song in America was “In a Shanty in old Shanty Town” by
Ted Lewis. I have been tiring to find a copy on a 78rpm record. I was going to frame it as art work. I have had no luck finding it.

Then I had a great idea, all I need is the label. If I could get someone to scan it and Email it to me I could print it and place it on any old 78.

I picked this phonograph up last year. It's very good shape except the baffle that locks the winding mechanism doesn't work, I rigged it up so I can play records on it.

I've tried researching it online but have found very little about it. I am hoping someone on this forum may be of help.
It has a plaque which says Musikhaus Merkur which translates from german to Musichouse Mercury. It also has a german address and phone number.

How does one post pictures on this forum? After all the phrase-A picture tells a thousand words is certainly true in this case.

I hope to hear from someone soon.

Thanks alot

Greetings, I came across a phonograph at a flea market. It seems to be in good shape. The turntable turns smoothly and quietly. It didn't have a needle. In the top of the lid there was a plaque that said, "Mason And Wheeler." The cabinet appeared to be in excellent condition. I just took two pictures of it hoping I could find information on the internet. No luck so far. And I couldn't figure out how to post the pictures on here. Does anyone know anything about this phonograph? Is it worth the $280 that is being asked for it? Thanks.

I recently came across an "Oriola" Console Phonograph, but can find very little information on it.

Tim Gracyk's website notes,

164. Oriola -- Metropolis Sales Company, 27 Union Square, New York City, New York. April 1917. (Mutual Trading Co., New York, filed applications on Oriola on 10/5/1918 and 8/23/1920, with used claimed since 1/15/1918; relation to this brand is unclear.)

any information would be appreciated.

Thanks.

vintagegrma on "Which kind of 78 records can you use with a new Mono 78 Stylus?"

We have purchased a NEW Shure M78S 1/2" mount--2.5 MIL Spherical Tip--1.5-3.0 g Tracking Force cartridge and stylus from an on-line needle store.
This will be used on a Garrard SL 95-B turntable to play our many 10 & 12 inch 78 records.

Our question is which 78 records can we safely play using this new stylus? We did not realize that people were still using steel needles way into the 40's--esp. with Victor records. We realize that the 78's from the 20's and 30's are out but can someone explain the best way to determine which 78's should still be played with the steel needles & which 78 records ?? with the newer diamond/sapphire style needles.

Also some 78's produced in the 1950's appear to be vinyl and we would assume you would not play these records with our M78S stylus. Any thoughts??

We are anxious to start cleaning up and playing our record collection but as you can read need to educate ourselves a little more. We hope this forum can help us out. We don't want to damage records or needles.

Also some on-line stores sell cleaning solutions without alcohol for 78 records--anyone out there with any experience on cleaning 78's--which kinds are safe to clean with a non-alcohol based cleaner? Would this be safe on early 20's and 30's records?

We do have a 1928 Victor Talking Machine Victrola VV 4-40 unit to play the older 78's on.

One more: Where are record dates of production hidden on records? Victor and Columbia Record Lists in Book form are helpful but it sure would be easier to crack the code, so to speak on the record itself if possible.

Thanks & everyone & Keep Winding! VG

Thank you very much in advance.

Be gentle - this is a new area and endeavor for me....

I am looking for a reproducer for an Edisonic Schubert - does this have to specifically be an "Edisonic reproducer" or will any old Edison reproducer do?

DOes the Edisonic Schubert play only Diamond Discs, or can "standard" 78s be played on it?

I am also seeking any information related to the fucnction and repair of the Edisonic Schubert.

Thanks in advance.
